"Shrovetide" is a picture of festivities, where picturesque moments are combined with the onomatopoeic of the music of a walking crowd, the mischievous sounds of folk instruments. The whole play consists of a kaleidoscope of small pictures that replace one another, with a constant return of the first topic. With the help of angular rhythmic figures, Tchaikovsky creates a picture with the noisy and joyful exclamations of the crowd, trampling the dancing mummers. Explosions of laughter and mysterious whisper merge into one bright and colorful picture of the festival.
