Since many have begun to compile a narrative of the events that have come to pass among us,

as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the Word have delivered them to us,

it seemed good to me, having carefully examined all things from the beginning, to write them down for you in order, Most Excellent Theophilus,

so that you may know the firm foundation of the doctrine in which you have been instructed.

In the days of Herod, King of the Jews, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abia, and his wife, Elizabeth, of the house of Aaron.

They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.

They had no children, for Elizabeth was barren, and both were already advanced in years. One day, as he was ministering before God in the order of his course,

by lot, as was the custom of the priests, it fell to him to enter the temple of the Lord to burn incense,

while the whole multitude of the people were praying outside during the burning of incense.

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

When Zechariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

The angel said to him, "Fear not, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will drink no wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a prepared people for the Lord.

And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is stricken in years."

The angel answered and said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God, and have been sent to speak to you and to bring you these good tidings.

And behold, you will be silent and will not be able to speak until the day that these things happen, because you have not believed my words, which will be fulfilled in their time."

Now the people were waiting for Zechariah and were amazed that he lingered in the temple.

But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them. And they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he communicated with them by signs and remained speechless.

And when the days of his ministry were ended, he returned to his house. After these days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself for five months, saying, "Thus has the Lord dealt with me in the days in which He looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men."

Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

to a virgin espoused to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary.

The angel came in to her and said, "Hail, highly favored! The Lord is with you; blessed are you among women."

But when she saw him, she was troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this could be.

And the angel said to her, "Fear not, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus." He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.

And Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I know no man?"

The angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

Behold, Your relative Elizabeth, who was called barren, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is her sixth month.

For with God nothing will be impossible.

Then Mary said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord! Be it done to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

Now Mary arose in those days and went with haste to the hill country, to a city of Judah,

and entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the babe leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

and cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!"

And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

For as soon as the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe leaped in the womb for joy.
