Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them;

but they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

And when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

And while they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.

And while they were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you, while he was yet in Galilee,

saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

And they remembered his words;

and they returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

These were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and the others with them, who told these things to the apostles.

And their words seemed to them idle, and they believed them not.

But Peter arose, and ran to the sepulchre, and stooping down, saw only the linen clothes lying there, and went back, marveling in himself at what was come to pass.

The same day two of them went to a village called Emmaus, which was distant from Jerusalem about sixty furlongs;

and they talked together about all these things that had happened.

And as they talked and reasoned with each other, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.

But their eyes were held, that they did not recognize him.

And he said to them, What is this that ye reason together as ye walk, and why are ye sad?

One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to him, “Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things that are done there in these days?”

And he said to them, “What things?” They said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;

How the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

But we trusted that it was he who should redeem Israel. And besides all this, this is the third day since these things happened.

But certain women also of our company astonished us: for they were early at the tomb

and did not find his body; and they came and said that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

And some of our people went to the tomb and found it just as the women said, but him they saw not.

Then he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

Ought not Christ to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?”

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

And they drew near to the village to which they were going; and he made as if he would go further.

But they restrained him, saying, “Abide with us, for the day is now toward evening.” And he went in and abode with them.

And as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to them.

Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. But he vanished from their sight.

And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us, while he talked with us on the road, and while he opened the scriptures to us?” And they arose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven apostles together, and those who were with them,

who said, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.

And they related what had happened on the way, and how He had been recognized by them in the breaking of bread.

As they were speaking these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace be with you.

They were troubled and afraid, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

But He said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do such thoughts enter into your hearts?

Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; handle Me and see: for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see Me have.

And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.

And while they yet believed not for joy, and marveled, He said to them, Have you here any meat?

They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish, and of a honeycomb.

And He took it, and ate before them.

And he said to them, “These are the things I spoke to you about while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled that were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms about me.”

Then he opened their minds so that they might understand the Scriptures.

And he said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,
