В мире бренном мог хвататься
In the mortal world could grasp
За порядок за закон!
For order, for the law!
За пару строк вы мне навесили клеймо бунтовщика!
For a couple of lines you have branded me as a rebel!
Мои стихи, меж тем, любят все - от генерала до ямщика!
Meanwhile, everyone loves my poems - from the general to the coachman!
"Граф Нулин", сказки, "Онегин" ну же,
"Count Nulin", fairy tales, "Onegin" - come on,
Неужто вы их не оценили?
Have you really not appreciated them?
Вещицы милые, но едва ли они кого-то объединили.
Nice little things, but they have hardly united anyone.
Да ну? А ну-ка! Чем меньше женщину мы любим?
Oh really? Come on! The less we love a woman?
...тем легче нравимся мы ей.
...the easier it is for her to like us.
Они сошлись. Волна и камень?
They have come together. Wave and stone?
Стихи и проза, лёд и пламень.

я разве спорю, в стихах вы гений, это известно.

А гений и злодейство...
And genius and villainy...
Вещи несовместные.

От сумбура мироздания!

Обречен каждый из нас
Each of us is doomed
По миру бренному скитаться
To wander through the mortal world
Я здесь чтоб могли спасаться -
I am here so that we can save ourselves -
Мы стихами в трудный час!
We are in difficult times with poetry!
Ну так напишите что-то,
Well, then write something,
Что объединит и утешит всех до одного
That will unite and console everyone to the last one
в уваженьи к отечеству, и правителям его!
in respect for the fatherland and its rulers!
Пётр Великий, к примеру, как вам, царь весьма высоко его чтит
Peter the Great, for example, what do you think, the Tsar honors him very highly
Такая поэма народ наш безусловно поддержит и сплотит!
Such a poem will certainly support and unite our people!
Строчить стихи на заказ? Увольте! Я поэт, а не портной!

А если этим докажете благонадежность свою вы еще особе одной
