Есть такое понятие – пропавшие без вести. Вот сегодня я хочу немного рассказать вам о группе The Animals – пропавшую без вести, при этом одну из величайших британских групп 1960-х годов.
There is such a thing as missing in action. Today I want to tell you a little about The Animals, one of the greatest British bands of the 1960s that went missing.

The Animals – одна из самых выдающихся групп Золотого Века. Существовали они в своем первоначальном составе совсе недолго – с 1964 по 1966 годы, записали четыре альбома и шесть синглов, но след оставили – как падающая звезда первой величины. Их певец Эрик Бердон пел блюз так, как никто другой из белых – без вежливости, без закавык, по-коренному. За это уважению к ним не было предела.
The Animals are one of the most outstanding bands of the Golden Age. They existed in their original lineup for a very short time – from 1964 to 1966, recorded four albums and six singles, but left a mark – like a shooting star of the first magnitude. Their singer Eric Burdon sang the blues like no other white man – without politeness, without hassles, in a native way. For this, there was no limit to the respect for them.

А петь Эрику именно так было отчего – о бедной жизни он знал не понаслышке: он вырос в суровом шахтерском городе Ньюкасле и, как у Максима Горького, улица была его университетом.
And Eric had a reason to sing like that – he knew about the poor life first-hand: he grew up in the harsh mining town of Newcastle and, like Maxim Gorky, the street was his university.
"Теперь-то я понимаю, что мои родители пытались дать мне все, что могли, но мне не позволялось иметь дома музыкальные инструменты. "Now I understand that my parents tried to give me everything they could, but I was not allowed to have musical instruments at home. You couldn't make noise at home; you couldn't even have a cat or a dog, because for that we would immediately be evicted from the housing for which my parents worked all their lives. And I couldn't wait for the moment when I could escape from there."

When he grew up a little, Eric began to go to Paris from time to time (fortunately, it's not far from England – just swim across the English Channel), where he spent time in the company of black jazzmen from America (of which Paris was full at the time). From them he absorbed the spirit of freedom.

Like attracts like; Soon, in his hometown, there was a group of people who shared Eric's feelings and dreamed of playing the black music he loved. They formed a band and called it The Animals.

Eric says: "We were supposed to be the first punks, we were aggressive, but we should have been more aggressive. I think people around us just didn't understand what the name of the band meant. Only the French understood us: we understand, they said, it's about the animal instinct: to kill when you're hungry."

And they were wild. Guitarist Hilton Valentine recalls: "I played the guitar on my back, rolled around the stage with it, fucked it - who else was doing that in 1964? We were all from poor working-class neighborhoods and were ready to do anything to escape this poverty. And we did it."

Their version of the old American prison ballad "The House of the Rising Sun" was the first sign of folk rock. A young Bob Dylan, who had just recorded the song on his first album (where they got it from), recalls being blown away by The Animals' version.

The song immediately became "number one" on both sides of the Atlantic.

Along with the Beatles and the Stones, The Animals were at the forefront of the so-called "British Invasion" - the import of English bands into the United States, which was hungry for roughness and political incorrectness.

What made it all so charming was the fact that the British, as a rule, worshipped black American music, from the blues to Tamla Motown, and America was their Promised Land - and a gold mine, too. Without becoming popular overseas, it was impossible to get rich. In addition, the young population of America perceived the newcomers from England as demigods. Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders, who was a schoolgirl at the time, said that in America at that time it was enough to simply pretend to be English - and such a person could do absolutely anything, a simple British accent immediately gave the owner the status of a superman.

In the 80s, this situation was repeated in miniature in Moscow, when penniless groups from Leningrad began to go there.
