'Twas the night before Christmas,

When out on the lawn

To the top of the porch,

As dry leaves

Before the wild hurricane fly,
Перед диким ураганом летят,
When they meet with an obstacle

Mount to the sky.

So, up to the housetop

The courses they flew,
Примчались олени,
With a sleigh full of toys

And St. Nicholas too!

And then in a twinkling

I heard on the roof,

The prancing and pawing

Of each little hoof!

As I drew in my head

And was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas

Came with a bound!
Он был одет в мех

С головы до ног,
He was dressed all in fur
И вся его одежда была запачкана
From his head to his foot,
Пеплом и сажей!
And his clothes were all tarnished

With ashes and soot!

Была у него за спиной,
A bundle of toys
И он выглядел как коробейник,
He had flung on his back,
Только что открывший свой мешок!
And he looked like a peddler

Just opening his pack!
Как сверкали его глаза,

Как весело играли ямочки на щеках,
His eyes how they twinkled,
Щеки его были как розы,
His dimples how merry,
Нос как вишня!
His cheeks were like roses,

His nose like a cherry!
Его маленький рот

Был изогнут как лук,
His drawl little mouth
И борода на подбородке
Was drawn up like a bow,
Была белой, как снег!
And the beard of his chin

Was a white as the snow!
Короткую трубку

Он крепко держал в зубах,
The stump of his pipe
И дым окружал его голову
He held tight in his teeth,
Как венок!
And the smoke it encircled his head

Like a wreath!
У него было широкое лицо

И круглый животик,
He had a broad face
Который трясся, когда он смеялся,
And a round little belly,
Как миска с желе!
That shook when he laughed

Like a bowl full of jelly!
Он был пухлый и толстенький,

He was chubby and plump,

I laughed when I saw him

In spite of myself!

A wink of his eye

And a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know

I had nothing to dread!
Он не сказал ни слова,

Но сразу приступил к работе,
He spoke not a word
И наполнил все чулки,
But went straight to his work,
Затем резко повернулся!
And filled all the stockings,

Then turned with a jerk!
И, приложив палец

К носу,
An' laying a finger
И кивнув,
Along side his nose,
Он поднялся по дымоходу!
An' giving a nod,

Up the chimney he rose!
Он прыгнул в свои сани,

Свистнул своим оленям,
He sprang to his sleigh,
И они все улетели
To his team gave a whistle,
Как пух от чертополоха.
An' away they all flew

Like the down of a thistle.
Но я услышал, как он воскликнул,

Когда скрылся из виду:
But I heard him exclaim
«Счастливого Рождества всем,
As he drove out of sight,
И всем спокойной ночи!»
"Happy Christmas to All,
And to all a Goodnight!"
