They would not harm the other as long as he brought a gift.

Жили они долго, пока с совестью лесник
They lived a long time, until the forester, with a guilty conscience,
Решил вдруг примириться, отказавшись от резни
Suddenly decided to make peace, abandoning the slaughter.
Совестно в миг стало за то, что он браконьер
He instantly felt ashamed of being a poacher.
Но вопрос остался, сам повесился иль нет
But the question remained: did he hang himself or not?
Совесть задушила или колдуна ответ
Did conscience strangle him, or was the sorcerer the answer?
