And it came to pass, when all the people had passed over the Jordan, that the Lord said unto Joshua, Take you twelve men of the people, a man of every tribe, and command them, saying, Take you from hence, out of the midst of the Jordan, where the priests' feet stood still, twelve stones, and carry them up with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place where ye shall lodge this night.

And Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed of the children of Israel, a man of every tribe,

and Joshua said unto them, Go ye before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take from thence, and lay every man upon his shoulder a stone, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel,

that they may be for a sign unto you. And it shall come to pass, when your children shall ask you in time to come, saying, What purpose have you these stones?

ye shall say unto them, A memorial of the waters of the Jordan being divided before the ark of the covenant of the LORD: when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were divided: so these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.

And the children of Israel did as Joshua had commanded; and they took twelve stones out of the Jordan, as the Lord had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the lodge, and laid them down there.

And Joshua set up the other twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, where the feet of the priests stood who bore the ark of the covenant; and they are there to this day.

And the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until all was finished which the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people crossed over with all haste.

And when all the people had crossed over Jordan, then the ark of the covenant of the Lord crossed over, and the priests also, before the people;

And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them.

About forty thousand armed men went over before the Lord to the plains of Jericho to fight.

On that day the Lord glorified Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

And the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying,

Command the priests who bear the ark of the testimony to come out of the Jordan.

Joshua commanded the priests, saying, Come out of the Jordan.

And when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord came out of the Jordan, as soon as the soles of their feet set foot on dry land, the waters of the Jordan rushed back to their place and went over all their banks, as they had done yesterday and the day before.

And the people came out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month and pitched at Gilgal, on the east side of Jericho.

And the twelve stones which they took out of Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal

and said to the children of Israel: When your children ask their fathers in time to come, What mean these stones?

Say to your children, Israel passed through this Jordan on dry ground,

for the Lord your God dried up the waters of Jordan for you, before you passed over it, just as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up before us, before we passed over it,

that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, and that you may fear the Lord your God always.
