Хранитель-Медведь приходил к ней играть

Весной и все лето, и осенью в дождь
In spring and all summer, and in autumn when it rains
Был ласков и добр могучий лесной вождь
The mighty forest leader was affectionate and kind
Но правило леса нельзя изменить
But the rule of the forest cannot be changed
Зимой он обязан себя сохранить
In winter he must preserve himself
Он спит в темноте, он не видит ни зги
He sleeps in the dark, he can't see a thing
Зимой к нему в гости, дитя, не ходи

Но Маше не спится, ей скучно одной
But Masha can’t sleep, she’s bored alone
Зачем же Мишутка ушел на покой?
Why did Mishutka retire?
Пошла его в чащу она искать
She went into the thicket to look for him
Решила Медведя от сна пробуждать
I decided to wake the Bear from his sleep
Ей зайцы кричали Постой, не ходи!
The hares shouted to her: Wait, don't go!
И волки рычали Там смерть впереди!
And the wolves growled There is death ahead!
Зверьё преграждало дорогу стеной
The beast blocked the road with a wall
Но Маша смеялась над их суетой
But Masha laughed at their fuss


В берлогу вошла, где дыхание тьмы
I entered the den, where the breath of darkness is
Не зная законов суровой земли
Not knowing the laws of the harsh land
Толкнула плечом Ну, Мишутка, вставай!
She pushed with her shoulder. Well, Mishutka, get up!
Как вдруг адский рык разорвал этот край
When suddenly a hellish roar tore this region apart
Не друг, а зверь дикий открыл глаза
Not a friend, but a wild beast opened his eyes
Инстинкт пробудился, как в бурю гроза
Instinct awakened, like a thunderstorm in a storm
Удар страшной лапы - жестокий, слепой
The blow of the terrible paw is cruel, blind
Снег стал ярко-красным, под детской рукой
The snow turned bright red, under a child's hand


Очнулся Медведь, видя кровь на снегу
The Bear woke up, seeing blood on the snow
Увидел, что сделал в безумном бреду
I saw what I did in my mad delirium
Рев горя и гнева потряс небеса
The roar of grief and anger shook the skies
Погасли навеки ребенка глаза
The child's eyes have gone out forever
Не друг теперь, а убийца и зверь
Not a friend now, but a murderer and a beast
Закрылась для счастья тяжёлая дверь
The heavy door closed for happiness


Пришёл он к друидам, склонив свою пасть
He came to the Druids, bowing his mouth
Чтоб страшную правду у ног их покласть
To lay the terrible truth at their feet
Родителей горе накрыло волной
Parents were overwhelmed by grief
И лес стал для них проклятой тюрьмой
And the forest became a damned prison for them
Будь проклят, Хранитель! - отец прокричал, -
Damn you, Guardian!- the father shouted, -
Чтоб смерти покоя ты век не встречал!
So that you never encounter death in peace!
Живи теперь вечно, не зная конца,
Live now forever, without knowing the end,
Носи это бремя до срыва венца!
Carry this burden until the crown falls off!
Ушли они прочь, бросив дом и очаг
They went away, leaving home and hearth
Оставив Медведя в бессмертных цепях
Leaving the Bear in immortal chains


Вернулась Мария в покинутый дом
Maria returned to the abandoned house
Но пусто и тихо, и пыльно кругом
But it’s empty and quiet and dusty all around
Свинья и собака забились под клеть
Pig and dog huddled under a cage
На Машу боятся они посмотреть
They are afraid to look at Masha
Она не поймет, что мертва, что фантом
She won't understand that she's dead, that she's a phantom
Что стала холодным и бледным пятном
What has become a cold and pale spot
И звери лесные бегут от неё
And the forest animals run away from her
Вокруг лишь холодное не бытьё
There is only cold nothingness around
Идёт она к Мише сквозь морок и тьму
She goes to Misha through the darkness and confusion
Ведь больше идти ей теперь не к кому
After all, now she has no one else to go to
И понял Медведь - это кара и дар
And the Bear understood - this is punishment and a gift


Она не взрослеет, навеки дитя
She never grows up, she's forever a child
Сквозь вечность и время, духом летя
Through eternity and time, flying in spirit
Хранитель-Медведь и призрачный свет
